Sounds of fear
There are situations that draw attention like a survival instinct. Among them, we can list: noticing something or someone approaching us, detecting a sound different from those we are used to hearing, or perhaps a familiar sound that makes us process a different idea about it.
When are we afraid? Fear is an imaginary being that lies in our hearts, and even when we are relaxed, we know that it is peering at us. It can be waiting for us in the future, in a letter that is coming, or when the phone rings. We can hear it in the distance and catch a whiff from an unpleasant perfume. Even if it is not an image, it may be a shadow or a curtain closing the space between us and safety.
Sometimes we walk down a familiar street and hear a voice inside us, or a shiver runs down our spine like a non-existent wind. Our hair stands on end, and we feel that something is wrong; then we are frightened. These things make us stop. If we do not pay attention to them, perhaps nothing will happen, or we may face an unexpected situation.
Everyone is afraid, but fear is not always a bad thing because its sound can be a warning of something or someone who might surprise us. This reaction can mean prudence and caution, warning us that it is better to retreat rather than advance.
If we decide to move forward out of necessity or sheer stubbornness, it is fear, with its hidden sound, that sharpens our senses. If we need to advance, our courage can light our way, but if we are arrogant, fear will try to stop us.
Stubborn people are innocent, and brave people can be reckless. Innocent people are stubborn because they think that bad situations happen only to others. Brave people, sometimes, are not imprudent because they know that only their behaviour can change their own stories or those of ordinary people. Cautious people want to survive and are afraid; because of this, they pay attention to the sound of fear when something wrong is coming.
Fear is like a cold winter wind that warns us to find protection. If fear were a colour, it would be the shadow of a ghost trying to stop the adventurers’ curiosity and courage.
An adventurer’s heart quickens when they hear the sounds of fear, like an engine ready to jump into the unknown. When curious people hear the sound of fear, they want to know more about it. Cautious people stop, and for them, the world will never change; if they do not want to overcome their limits, they will retreat, and the world will remain the same. To change the world, we need to face fear, ignore its sound, and move forward.
