Looking into the eyes
If we look into a dog’s eyes when its face is in our hands, it is only wanting our attention. The brightness of its eyes can express many things in this silent dialogue between two beings, because silence can reveal secrets beyond our imagination. We may say that when dogs close or open their eyes, perhaps they are saying so many things that we do not need to understand anything else.
On the other hand, if we are talking to a blind person who cannot see us, when their hands touch us to follow the lines of our faces, they are trying to visualise what is impossible to see. Their smile, however, seems to hold so much meaning. Only they can smell our scent from their solitary darkness. They can draw our faces perfectly, and know more about us than we know.
In those moments, we are strangers receiving affectionate gestures.
Social media is a bit like this. In the end, how many lovers have met through frozen glances from their photos or been enchanted by words exchanged between them? There is a mystery behind strangers’ eyes. What could their existence be like? What is hidden in the darkness of their solitude when they try to find happiness wrapped like a gift through the internet? Or perhaps in a line at the airport, at the supermarket, or at bus stations. We have hands eager to reach for unknown hands, scents and different kinds of voices.
Dogs touch our hands with innocent eyes, and like them, some of us chase fantasies and imaginary things, not to understand what we are in our moments of irrationality. In these moments, we are giving strangers the best of us.
We are often blind when we see the world through fantasies we create, while we are destroying what we are best at: challenging our limits.
A dog, in its solitary mind, does not wish for much – only to be safe, even if for a few moments. For blind people, it is enough to perceive what is in front of them, trying to detect it through scents, sounds and the touch of their hands.
Our blindness cannot prevent us from losing our humanity. Like dogs, we have to let our hearts follow love and see in others what they truly are, and not what our blindness wants to see.
