Lost battles
Being mature means having the ability to comprehend the difficulties encountered in life. Life is like a path filled with stones, we shouldn’t rush over them, or we may trip and fall and make the journey even more difficult.
Maturity teaches us that there are no lost battles, only chosen battles, or the final prize may be irrelevant. If our adversary is not important to us, we may decide whether to engage in confrontation or walk away.
The challenges we face in life are like battles, we must choose whether to confront, circumvent or ignore them. Maturity helps us to make this decision by teaching us to recognise the signs the life show us. These signs are often ignored by foolish, inexperienced and anxious people who waste their energy unnecessarily. On the other hand, mature people learn to conserve their energy and focus only on relevant and productive activities.
Nowadays, the most common battles we face are not physical but verbal – especially on social media. Challenging people in this environment is the best example of wasting time if we attempt to persuade people who do not want to be convinced. In such cases, silence becomes a powerful strategy and a significant weapon for those who understand the real value of debate.
Stones and obstacles represent the situations or people that cross our path. Learning to avoid obstacles and navigate around them we refine our ability to interpret facial expressions, read body language, and predict future problems. This strategy helps us to discern whether an opponent or situation is worth confronting or not. Avoiding necessary battles doesn’t mean cowardice or animosity but rather a way of preserving our mental well-being. In short, life itself is a battlefield. Some fight in self-defence to protect their principles or secure their future in an unpredictable world, while others move through life without worrying about the future.
Not all battles result in victory or personal gains; sometimes, they are opportunities to experience life or witness the unfolding of history, whether over a century, a decade or even a single day. We hold in our minds our most memorable battles, like snapshots from a time that cannot be reversed, but they may represent an era or a hope for transformation of the world or ourselves.
Stones are thrown at us, and sometimes we throw them back. Somehow, they burn our souls whether we get involved in battles or start them, they can leave scars on our souls.
Eventually, with this experience, a single glance may reveal which stones to step over and which battles to engage in. Stones and battles are similar – some can be large and lightweight, while others can be small and heavy. Some battles are inevitable, and some must to be fought. And at times, we ourselves become the stones in the path of others.
