Infinite beauty
Is there something greater than beauty? I wonder if there is something beyond the meaning of beauty. When beauty draws our attention, it is like a gaze, a colour, a peculiar and different detail we have never seen before, and it conveys an idea of perfection or astonishment. We could conclude that there is nothing beyond beauty; however, in general, beauty does not convey an idea of greatness or majesty over everything. Whether it is small or vast, beauty draws our attention because it reveals attraction, difference and enchantment.
When we reach this level of understanding, we may imagine something undefined, untouchable, or without scale. What’s more, there is something in the air, like a gateway from reality to a vast and challenging place. It is a spiritual journey that invades the limits of our souls and reaches the incredible.
We may imagine beauty travelling through time and space to rule over everything. This abstraction may define the infinite beauty as something sublime, unimaginable, and untouchable.
Magnificent and frightening events, whether created by nature or not, often show us the magnitude of beauty. When we watch an impressive landscape that fills our view, and we need to look around to understand its greatness or a raging river flowing rapidly through space, these scenes are not beautiful in a simple sense, but they hold a beauty of their own, a sublime beauty created by their magnitude and power.
In front of a sculpture or a painting, we are static figures before beauty. At the same time, we are small and powerless beings before colossal events, because we are facing forces beyond our understanding.
The sublime can be an ally or an enemy, because sublime things are uncontrollable.
Everything feels sublime and astonishing things before a vision of a green, living forest, a landscape seen from the top of a mountain, or sailing through enormous waves; automatically, before nature that we cannot control. Thus, the sublime contains both beauty and fear, working together to inspire admiration and respect. Nature imposes its own rhythm and its right to be what it is: powerful and wonderful. When we conquer it, this becomes a sublime act of overcoming barriers we believed to be impossible to cross. In that moment, we challenge the power of nature and place ourselves alongside it.
In conclusion, when we overcome limits, we prove our strength in the face of the unknown. Astronauts travel into space and see the infinite without a defined horizon. They defy the unknown and reveal a power beyond themselves. Therefore, the act of beauty is the attempt to reach the unbelievable, and to be sublime, we must see the limit and be ready to challenge destiny.
But if a work of art is only beautiful, how can it also be sublime? In this case, if the act of admiration becomes an attitude of self-transformation, stimulating our souls, encouraging our reflections and changing our thoughts – this overcoming becomes the sublime. Infinite beauty is always ready to transform behaviour and make us better.
