Being a woman and becoming a woman
There is a sense beyond these Simone de Beauvoir’s words: being a woman and becoming a woman. There is an article and an adjective in this phrase because being a woman sounds like an object and becoming a woman sounds like admiration.
A woman is not a luxury item and she wasn’t born to be used or to execute specific functions. Furthermore, she doesn’t exist to stay in a place ready for doing things in a limited space like a definite article.
A woman was born to be a human being and plenty of adjectives. If she is an article she is an indefinite article. She is an open book prepared to receive new options and new discoveries. A woman must be a traveller who arrives in a city and she is ready to get to know it.
A woman doesn’t exist to be exposed in a store window and to be adorned like an article to be bought or sold by someone who can pay more. Articles haven’t got wishes and wills but adjectives have got them. Adjectives are personal and authentic and don’t need someone says if they are delicate or beautiful. An adjective has got its rights and duties but they aren’t determined by anyone.
Some women and men accept being consumer goods and others would like to be adjectives in the world. Adjectives aren’t immobilized because they organize themselves to organize the world. Then, adjectives have a sense of power and they can be evil or good whatever these things mean.
A woman who lives only to take care of her home is not an adjective, she is an article. Having kids is a function, in fact, an article. To be different is becoming an adjective. These women live at a crossroads: They have to choose between feeling the beauty of the world or seeing it through the window of their homes. And choosing to wait for their kids to arrive from school or being the one responsible for crowding the world.
We live in a society, then we are partners, an association between women and men. Nobody is an article but an adjective and we become articles in each other.
Then, women become women and men become men. Women are owners of their bodies and will, and they have to be measured like adjectives. And women must be seen in their capabilities, and not as beings who distribute affection and tenderness. Because these feelings are acts of love.
We were born women and became women, men, people, human beings and we fill our blank page with humanity because we were born indefinite articles.
